Retinopathy of Prematurity(ROP)

An eye disease that occasionally develops in premature or low birth weight babies is known as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). In babies that are born too early, the blood vessels in the retina (the light sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye) may not be fully developed.

Sometimes, as the baby develops, these blood vessels may grow abnormally. With more serious symptoms it can lead to damage of the retina and have an impact on the child’s vision.

It is therefore very important that babies at risk of ROP have regular eye checks. Early detection means that the condition can be monitored and treated early, minimizing serious vision problems or permanent vision loss.
